Broome earns people’s choice award

By Mark Pavilons

Well known King artist Marianne Broome has added another accolade to her long list of accomplishments.
Broome's painting “Yellow Iris” was named people's choice award winner at the 2013 Vaughan juried exhibition, which ran January to March.
Artists from Vaughan and across the GTA were invited to submit original works to this sixth annual juried show. Some 171 pieces were submitted in what was regarded as the most competitive year to date, so Broome's honour was hard earned.
Jurors agreed that this year's lineup “exemplifies a high caliber of talent in a broad scope of media and continues to exceed the benchmark for juried art exhibitions ...”
Broome received the most number of popular votes, a prestigious achievement to be sure. She said ballots were received at the exhibition and the public also voted online.
This was Broome's first year at the Vaughan show. She was pleased with the honour, noting it was a reflection of what the public liked.
Yellow Iris was painted in 2012 and it's a 36-inch-by-36-inch canvas. Broome is perhaps best known for her close-up floral creations, but she stressed she also does abstract and landscape pieces, too.
It seems Broome enjoys this particular flower. She won Best in Show for Iris of Gold III at the Franklin Carmichael Art Group juried show in Etobicoke. And she won Best in Show for White Iris at the Richmond Hill Group of Artists annual juried show.
Broome is one of the organizers of the Studio Tour King, slated for April 27 and 28. More than 30 artists, including seven new additions, will showcase their work in their studios for the weekend event.
The full-time artist has had many shows and exhibitions and is a sought-after instructor and guest speaker.
