On Saturday, October 25th, at 11:05 p.m. a passerby motorist located a male party laying injured in the southwest ditch at the intersection of the 20th Sideroad and the 5th Line in New Tecumseth. The male party was laying in close proximity to an All-Terrain Vehicle, which was positioned on its side.
Emergency personnel were dispatched and tended to the injured male driver. When members of the Nottawasaga Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrived, further investigation revealed the driver was operating a 2008 Suzuki L75 which is an All-Terrain Vehicle. The driver, 31-year old male from New Tecumseth was transported to hospital in serious condition. It has been determined that the driver was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The OPP Technical Collision Investigators and Collision Reconstruction were on scene to assist with the investigation. They follow a standardized field reporting and note-taking process. The OPP has developed a concise and professional method of recording evidence and providing an official document that ensures an accurate peer-reviewed analysis of the collision. Officers work very hard to complete a collision investigation as quickly as possible without compromising the integrity of investigation and in the interests of the motoring public.
On the 26th of October at 3:30 a.m., police confirmed that the driver was now in stable condition while in the hospital. No charges have been laid, and the investigation is continuing.
The OPP is reminding riders to exercise caution and follow basic safety rules when operating off-road vehicles. Operators who do not wear their helmets are at a much higher risk of serious injury or death in the event of a collision. The Off-Road Vehicles Act of Ontario specifies that drivers and passengers must wear a helmet unless the vehicle is driven on property owned by the person driving the Off-Road Vehicle; the driver and passenger must wear an approved motorcycle helmet that is securely fastened under the chin with a chin strap. The penalty for not wearing a helmet carries a fine of $90 dollars.
