Scam alert! What the Shelburne Legion Branch 220 wants you to know

Recently, according to sources, a gentleman received a phone call he believed was from his local Legion asking for a donation. Lesa Peat, President of the Shelburne Legion 220 Branch cautions local residents to be on high alert commenting, “If anyone gets a phone call from someone claiming to be from their local Legion asking for a donation, it’s a scam! There will never be Legion representative of any kind or anyone acting on behalf of any Legion member soliciting donations, or funds over the phone. Contact local authorities to report the incident, call your local Legion Branch and make inquiries, but do not give any personal information, send money, or credit card information.”
Quite alarming to realize fraudsters hunt all day long and will prey upon those most vulnerable, a despicable character trait especially when scrutinizing a newspaper to find out who has passed away and used a local Legion for a Celebration of Life gathering, following up with a call asking for a donation to the Legion, hoping the victim will feel so grateful for the use of the legion as was the instance in this particular case. Shelburne’s RBC recently held a Fraud seminar for the Public and advised people to be brave reminding them to ask questions, make enquiries with friends and family, call your bank, ask your lawyer and report the incident to local authorities or call the Canadian Anti-Fraud hotline Toll Free at 1-888-495-8501.
