Photo Voice project complete

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health completed their Photo Voice project “Picturing Health in Our Community” in June with a display of photography at the Shelburne Library captured and captioned by Shelburne residents. Photos pictured what helped or hindered healthy living in Shelburne. The photographer of “Strawberries” explained that the photo “shows the difference in price of strawberries. One is organic, the other is non organic. Even without a sale price, the price difference is over $2.00. Many families would like to add more organic foods to their diet, but sadly many cannot afford to do so. Hopefully in the future the prices of organic will drop so more families can eat organic fruits and vegetables.” The study found common themes in the different communities' including: high food prices made staying healthy difficult in everything from food to fitness; access to fast food, rather than fresh food made a healthy diet challenging; and low income areas were less likely to support healthy living with major barriers to those with fewer resources.

Lisa Needham, a Public Health nutritionist and one of the hosts of the Photo Voice display at the Shelburne Public Library last month, says it was “an exploratory project” by Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) to discern where changes can be made in the community to make a healthy lifestyle more accessible. Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) is studying how surroundings affect health choices and how the organization can work “to make the healthiest options the easiest options” in their communities. The group asked local residents to take photographs and write captions to be sent to researchers for analysis. Blair Hodgson, the project coordinator reports that the photographs will be used to show “specific ways that a person's social, physical and cultural environment can make it easier or harder to engage in healthy behaviours.” This Shelburne photographer captured a local paramedic and explains: “Who can help people with complex issues in their home. The Dufferin paramedics via their new “community para medic program”! Their goal is to maintain those with complex issues e.g. a diabetic with wounds and breathing problems at home. They will come to you. Do you need this service? Referrals come from doctors, CCAC, discharge planners and others. This is PRO active health care!”
