Summer Programming
Children’s Program:
What a fun day! This morning we had about 10 little ones enjoying our Junior Lego club, creating beach scenes to go along with our theme this week. Shannon, one of our summer students read the story, Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach and then talked about possibilities for building their projects. We also have a colouring sheet with beach objects in case they are done building and want to change focus. We always try to include a literacy component into our programs and of course, as they build items together, they are developing social skills.
Teen Scene:
Now for our fun program this afternoon for our Teens! Another foody event… first sushi, then pizza and Jade and Alice always discuss healthy choices but today I`m not so sure. This might just be a totally fun day as they engage the Teens in a Cupcake Decorating War. We`ll see what they come up with and wonder who gets to judge? Yum!
Ongoing:
Children’s Programs:
Paws to Read is this Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. Please call in to register for future weeks as we already have a full sign-up this week. Last week, we had two dog friends to whom the children could read, Mac and Memphis. This is such a good way for children to develop reading skills and enjoy their special canine friend.
This week marks the halfway point in our TD Summer Reading Club! The children in the program have read over 760 books so far, as well as participating in all our activities throughout the week. This Friday is the last possible day to register for the program but children are always welcome to participate in the activities we have planned Please drop in and pick up one of our calendars to check out all our activities that are available throughout the week. These programs help build early childhood literacy by engaging the children with various activities that promote the enjoyment of reading and hands on learning. Be sure to give us a call at 519-925-2168 or drop in to see what program might interest you!
Teen Scene:
July has been full of mouth-watering activities for our teens, most of which centred on healthy food choices. This week our program deviated from course and we hosted a cupcake war! There were only 2 rules: don’t eat it until it has been judged, and don’t throw them. Some of our members felt we weren’t staying true to the notion of war then, but they had fun anyway. This coming Thursday (July 30th) promises to be a mysteriously good time as our teens endeavour to solve a hypothetical “crime” that has been committed at our library. Whodunnit? We don’t know; look for the answer next week!
Other news:
Join us at the BIA Shelburne Farmer’s market again this Thursday. It is such a great market and we really enjoy chatting with folks and talking about our programs and services. We also have some gently used books for which we just ask a small donation. This is a good way to stock up on your summer reading for the beach, or for travel or you can always borrow your great summer reading books from YOUR library! Each week, I choose special books that I think will appeal to Market goers. We’ve had great cookbooks, some paperback novels, and this week some gardening and history books. Last week, we also had a special draw… a basket of Romance books won by Andrea. See you there; there will be another special draw this week.
Book Donations:
We have received some excellent book donations over the last few months and have been able to incorporate some of the new ones in our collection but as for ones for our book sales, we are full!! We have lots of good books for our book sales but have run out of storage room so please wait before bringing in any books unless they are absolutely in mint condition. Bringing in encyclopedias and old musty books just means that we have to take them to the dump for you. We do appreciate your thought in wanting to help us raise funds but please examine your contributions carefully. That being said, last week we were given an amazing collection of non-fiction history books that went mostly into our collection, they were so outstanding.
