Running week days July 20-31st under the direction of Danielle Gamache, with the help of Julia Herzberg and Jaimi-Lee Allen, kids are developing skills while building confidence and learning to be responsible for their role, the production and the group. “I'm already seeing changes from day one,” says Gamache, “kids who were too shy to speak are becoming very vocal and expressive. I'm especially impressed with the seven year olds who are showing great ability despite being new to performance.” Gamache says the camp gives kids the opportunity to “go out on a limb and try something new.” Kids 7-14 years learn theatre games, improvisation and character development, and perform songs, dances and short plays. Danielle Gamache is part of the LP Stage Productions team that has been bringing excellent musical productions, many of them entirely youth casts, to Grace Tipling Hall in the past few years. The group has developed a reputation for producing popular, and challenging Broadway musicals such as Blood Brothers, Annie, Gypsy, Peter Pan, and most recently Into the Woods. The shows may not have always been as well attended as the hard working group would like, but anyone who saw the performances will tell you they were top rate, especially considering the ages of the kids involved. Area youth are given the opportunity to work with quality musical directors and choreographers, as well as receiving direction from Alison Port and Dale Lundy the founders of LP Stage Productions, at a minimal cost of $50 per production to help cover insurance fees at Grace Tipling. Danielle herself started performing as a child taking dance lessons, singing in the Toys Choir, and acting with Theatre Orangeville's young company. Her first play was “Wee Pals” with the Caledon Town Hall Players at the age of nine. She went on to graduate with a degree in Theatre Studies from the University of Guelph where she worked with and was inspired by well known Canadian playwright Judith Thompson. With a skilled stage presence and a powerful singing voice, Danielle continues to work with LP Stage Productions as well as performing with theatre groups such Royal City Musical Productions in Guelph, Shooting Star Theatre in Hamilton where she is currently in rehearsal for Oklahoma, and the Brampton Music Theatre where she will be part of the cast of Mary Poppins this fall. Gamache's goal for these kids is to learn how to develop characters through “movement, dialogue and expression.” She wants them to build performance confidence that transfers to real life – an important skill for the future. These days, in a job market flooded with eager young graduates looking for the best position in their chosen field, confidence and presentation is key. Young people not only have to have the credentials, but the confidence to present them effectively under pressure in an interview. Graduates, employees looking to move up the ladder, and major corporations are now hiring performance specialists to give them the edge in the market place. Currently, LP Productions Summer Youth Drama Camp is working out of Turn it Out dance studio behind Shelburne Town Hall. Those interested are welcome to come see the youth as they perform a showcase of theatrical scenes from the drama camp on Friday July 31st at 1:30 p.m. Danielle Gamache has announced that she will run an after-school and weekend drama program in the fall.
