Muskies have a new head coach

August 20, 2015   ·   0 Comments

The Shelburne Senior AA Muskies will have a new head coach on the bench this coming season as Don McCarthy takes over the head spot.
McCarthy brings a wealth of hockey experience to the club. A former player with the Toronto Marlies and former coach of the York-Simcoe AAA as well as coaching the local Bantam team, McCarthy was recruited after being noticed by Muskies management.
“I’ve played a lot of hockey,” McCarthy said. “I work with Shelburne minor hockey coaching the Bantam team. They (Muskies management) like my style. I’m a no-nonsense kind of guy,” he said of being asked to sign on with the Senior team.
The Muskies had a tough season in 2014 / 15, winning only four games and finishing in the number seven spot in the eight team North division of the WOAA.
McCarthy hopes to turn that around with recruitment of new players and evaluating returning members.
The Senior season starts in October but he is already started putting the team together.
“We are in talks with a few new players and we’ve got some more talent coming out,” he said. “In order to put fans in the seats you have to win games. We need to turn this around period by period and game by game.”
The Club will begin try-outs in September to get ready for the new season that starts in mid October.
The Senior League is divided into two divisions. The North, with an eight team line-up and the South Division which has six teams. All teams are expected to return for the start of the 2015 / 16 season.
The Muskies typically have a strong fan base in Shelburne.
The Senior League is comprised of players who have completed their Junior careers. It’s a fast paced, hard hitting style of hockey that the fans love.
