A ‘Super Burger’ served in a streetcar nomore

After over twenty years, it time to say goodbye to the iconic TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) streetcar that is attached to Super Burger at the corner of Highway 89 and Highway 10.
Purchased in a TTC auction in 1990 for $1000 the streetcar was built in the 1940’s and was originally numbered 4341. The car was taken out of service in the late 80’s with the arrival of new streetcars.
Owner James Nicolaou estimates he spent close to $50,000 converting the streetcar into part of the existing building at the time which included re-wiring it, installing heating and cooling as well as rearranging the seats and adding tables for patrons to eat on.
Nicolaou bought the streetcar from the TTC in 1990, and as he explained, “they were doing away with it at that time and it wasn’t any good for them (the TTC) but it was good for me. When I brought it up here I though I would have it for about five years,” said Nicolaou. “Well, it’s been here for almost twenty-five years.”
Currently Nicolaou is constructing a new Super Burger building suitable to seat 94 persons, minus its most famous asset. Fixing up the old streetcar would be cost prohibitive, and Nicolaou believes it’s time to let it go. “It’s outlived it’s usefulness and it’s all rusted up” he says. “It’s come to the end of its road … I’ll be glad to get rid of it at the present time. It’s an eyesore now.”
He hopes to have the new and improved Super Burger open by the end of this year.
