Theft of tailgates

Central Region has seen an increase of theft involving tailgates from pickup trucks. Since the beginning of July, the Region has seen over 40 tailgates reported stolen to area detachments. Most of these thefts are from area vehicle dealerships, including Stayner, Orillia and Barrie. Some of the newer style pickup trucks are now equipped with cameras for reversing which make this type of tailgate very attractive to thieves.
Most new model pickup trucks are now equipped with a locking system. The OPP would like to remind all owners of pickup trucks to take the time to lock their tailgates when they are not being used. Keep yourself from becoming an easy target by properly securing your vehicle.
Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in and around any of the dealerships over the past couple of months is asked to contact their local detachments or contact Crime Stoppers.
