Distracted Driving campaign

October 30, 2015   ·   0 Comments

Ontario’s ban on hand-held devices while driving took effect on October 26, 2009.
An amendment to section 78 of the Highway Traffic Act made it illegal for drivers to talk, text, type, dial or email using hand-held cell phones and other hand-held communications and entertainment devices.
Since 2009 the fine has increased from $155 to the current total payable of $490 and as of September 1, 2015 there are now three (3) demerit points associated with an offence.
Police will be out in force this week looking for drivers who are using their hand held cell phones while behind the wheel.
Especially important, will be during Halloween night where drivers must pay extra attention to all the young children out trick or treating.
Traffic safety continues to be among the top concerns in our community. We must all do our part to keep our roads safe.
Please do not use your hand held device while driving. Pull over and stop in a safe location to use the device, make the call before you drive or use hands free only.
