Shelburne Public Library – summer reads are here!

Now I think summer is finally here although we had ground frost our way this morning but it is never too soon to start thinking about gardening. Our gardening books are just flying off the shelves as folks are busy planning new garden projects, arbours, trellises, water features and many new and innovative gardening techniques. Myself, I hope to get around to making some hypertufa pots and containers for plants. These are made with a mixture of cement, perlite and peat moss and are so rustic and attractive, particularly suited for succulents.

Tuesday night is the Grand Finale for Dufferin Reads: One Book One County featuring Cathy Marie Buchanan talking about her book, The Painted Girls. The event this year was sold out almost one month ago. It is an excellent book and if you haven't already read this book, now is the time to read it as we have 3 copies and are down to just one hold on each.

The excitement is building for our Genealogy sessions on June 9 and 10th with Marian Press. The first session will be like our other Library Literary Events, full of information and lots of interesting strategies for searching for information about your ancestors. Marian is really a great speaker and has lots of stories to tell and especially talk about all the relevant sites where you can find the information for free! The Monday session which is the hands on computer session is full but we are taking names for the waiting list.

We are just putting the finishing touches on our submission for the Town of Shelburne Newsletter with all the programs and events we are planning. We have new programs for teens, a Book Club we are calling Pizza &Page and more. We also have new programs connected to our TD Summer Reading Club and expect those to run Tuesday and Wednesday mornings starting in July. Check out our web site or our Facebook page for more details as to time and activity.

We have had our first patrons in for Computer lessons yesterday and it was really great how our students were able to help with word processing and internet searching. If you have wanted to get some one-on-one help with computer related work, setting up emails etc., just call (925-2168) to book an appointment for an hour. It is free and you can come on a regular basis to build up and practice your skills. This also includes any help you need using your eBook reader or tablet.

This Thursday, May 30th is our Book Club meeting 2-4 and we have some great new books I have reviewed. One that I just finished was The Butler Speaks by David MacPherson. It was fun reading about all the things the modern homeowner needs to know: how to host a dinner party, make a bed, set a table, and prepare afternoon tea and so on. It certainly reinforces some concepts of good etiquette and gives tips for modernizing some of the more traditional ones.

Now for the new books which will be available for sign out in the next day or so.
