Shelburne shops fall victim to counterfeit U.S. cash

January 22, 2016   ·   0 Comments

Shelburne Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two female suspects in relation to counterfeit American cash being used in the area.

At least four local businesses have fallen victim to counterfeit American cash, according to Police, who were notified by RBC when one of the impacted businesses, Mac’s Milk, tried depositing the cash.

Other area businesses hit by the counterfeit cash include Giant Tiger, Shelburne Town Pharmacy, and Subway Sandwiches.

“The fake money that has been circulated in Shelburne is of moderate quality and, to the untrained eye, may appear authentic,” said Police Constable Paul Neumann. “If anyone attempts to pay with American money, especially in larger denominations, it is important to check the quality of the paper, feel if the print is raised, check if they are cut cleanly and evenly and, if possible, compare it to a bill you know is real. Or, even better, insist on Canadian cash, which is more difficult to duplicate, or have them pay with their debit card.

“Also check the serial numbers. If they are paying with more than one bill, the bills may have the same serial number, which clearly means they are copies.”

The first suspect is described as a female, 18 to 30 years old, white, of medium build, with dark long hair, wearing high beige or light brown boots, black coat with fur collar that has a deep V in the front, a burgundy or dark red sweater, and a heavy gold necklace, carrying a beige or light brown wallet, black pants.

The second suspect is also described as a female between the ages of 18 to 30, white, of a heavier build, wearing black pants and boots, a dark parka with fur around the collar, who wore sunglasses while in the store.
