Head Librarian and CEO of the Shelburne Public Library, Rose J. Dotten is extremely pleased to announce this year’s TD Summer Reading Club Program will take kids across Canada!

TD’s theme this year is simply “Go!” and Shelburne is getting ready to do just that.

Starting Saturday July 6th, at 10:30 a.m., kids can sign up, get their passports, and begin the journey across Canada through reading. This, “free” and very exciting program is completely conceived by the Shelburne Library staff and will include, educational reading about every province  in Canada, games, challenges, fun facts, movies, crafts and more.

“The TD Summer Reading Club fosters an excitement and love of reading. We do everything we can to encourage reading,” said Dotten.

Dotten stresses the fact that this program is designed to meet the needs of every child and is not a competition, nor a race. For those children who enjoy competition, there is always the very satisfying personal best, especially for those children returning to the program for this years’ challenge. Every age can participate as parents can read to the very young.

Dotten expects over 130 kids to participate and by the end of the two month program, Shelburne Kids will have read an astounding collective amount between three and 4 thousand books.  The Program will be run under the Children’s Librarian, Jeanne Cruikshank, and her two summer assistants, Lindsay Whiting and Emily Sedgwick.

Dotten, so very proud of the Shelburne Public Library, her staff, and her community proudly boasts winning the TD Summer Club Reading Award of 2011. “This is not about who reads the most, it’s about encouraging a love of reading and what that may mean to each child,” said Dotten.

Dotten had this to say about the charming and “homey” library.

“Our programs are successful and community partnerships are an integral part of the library.” Also noting, “We may appear small but we stay very current and if we don’t have a particular item in, we can order it.”

Register now or at the opening event which begins July 6 at 10:30 a.m. to participate in this fun filled program that doesn’t cost a thing to travel across Canada, and bring your imaginations!
