Farmers’ Market offers fundraising opportunities

Winter is the time when snowbound Canadians dream up plans for the garden and all things that grow to pass the long days of cold and dark.

The team at Shelburne Farmers' Market has been busy doing just that – coming up with new ideas for the launch of the Market with the promise of spring approaching.

This year, the Shelburne Farmers' Market season will run for 18 weeks from May 26 until September 22, on Thursday afternoons from 3 – 7 p.m., at the corner of First and Owen Sound Street.

A new market initiative for 2016 includes a fundraising opportunity for local service groups and businesses that contribute to community causes.

Farmers' Market Chair A.J. Cavey says she is “really looking forward to seeing this market come together again so we can support local artisans and farmers, and provide a great venue for a delicious Thursday night wander through the market.”

“Last year was our first year in our new in-town location,” says Cavey, “We are looking forward to building on that success this year! We are hoping to maintain our musical guests, add some new ones and involve community groups and local businesses to provide some special themed days and events.”

Community fundraising groups will be offered one of 18 available free spaces at the market, as long as a portion of the proceeds collected go back into the community.

“It is a great way to raise funds and awareness for events in our community,” says Shelburne BIA Chair Jodi Jones. “[The Market team is] hoping that the participants will come up with some creative ideas.”

The Market committee is also planning weekly events at the Farmer's Market, in addition to musical entertainment.

The event will continue to showcase local musical talent throughout the season, as well as creating some special theme week events, including Christmas in July, Caribbean Holiday, and Hockey Day in Shelburne – with more to come.

A calendar of events will be available on the Shelburne BIA website where residents can find all of the information about the events: www.shelburnebia.ca. 1

“We are limited to only 18 weeks,” says Ms. Jones, “so we are asking for groups to get their applications in ASAP.”

Groups can contact Jodi Jones, A.J. Cavey, or Joey Lemieux the Farmers' Market Manager for more information. Message the Shelburne Farmers' Market on Facebook to sign up.

Vendors wishing to return and new potential vendors are invited to fill out online registration forms at www.shelburnefarmersmarket.ca 2.

Vendor registration will be open until March 18 and vendors will be juried and chosen on March 22. Fees for vendors for the 18-week season are $230 for a 10x10 foot space or $280 for a 10x20 foot space with the option of paying a weekly fee of $16 for a 10x10 foot space.

Electricity fees apply for those who require it. Enquiries can be directed to: farmersmarketshelburne@gmail.com or info@shelburnebia.ca
