Local students show off cabinetmaking skills On Thursday, March 10t, two students from Centre Dufferin High School, Joseph Freeman-Woollett and Christopher Marsh, had an opportunity to compete in a regional Skills Canada competition for cabinetmaking. Students arrived at the competition with only the skills and knowledge gained while in their individual schools' woodworking programs. They were then provided with a drawing and an example of the project, in this case a small stepping stool with tapered legs attached at an angle with two aprons. Using the shop equipment, and their expertise, they had approximately six hours to create the project. They could not interact with any instructor unless it is to clarify a specific detail. At the end of the allotted time, a local Woodworking Business Professional arrived to judge each student's project and first, second and third prizes were awarded. The first place student advances to the Province wide Ontario Technological Skills Competition held at the Manulife Financial Sportsplex in Waterloo on May 2 – 4. Both Joseph and Christopher represented Centre Dufferin admirably and Joseph's efforts were honoured with a third place finish. By Michelle Janzen |
