March of Dimes raises hundreds for community programs

By Marni Walsh

And the money rolled in with every twirl of the fork.

34 guests attended the March of Dimes Spaghetti Dinner held at the Mel Lloyd Centre last week, raising $340 in ticket sales and hundreds more from private donations and bids in the silent auction, according to Kelly Semple, Community Support Leader.

“Dufferin County is one of the smallest programs in West Central, but always raises the largest amount of money,” says Ms. Semple. “The local businesses and community are very generous and support us immensely.

“Projected funds raised from the silent action and raffles are currently at $505. We have also received private donations from residents of the community totalling another $350.”

In 2006, March of Dimes Canada opened an office in Shelburne at 200 Mill Street and now has six programs operating, as well as a large Outreach Program in Orangeville.

Currently, the organization is serving 46 clients with room for expansion.

There are apartments designated for the disabled as well as an outreach program, a seniors' program that assists the elderly in remaining in their own homes as long as possible, a bathing program, a dining program, and a transportation program partnered with the County of Dufferin.

“The most recent program launched in Shelburne was the assisted living program for seniors which has become a great success,” says March of Dimes Community Support Leader Ann Abbott.

Both Ann and Kelly “oversee the programs and support the staff, “as well as interview new consumers, so they can provide a comprehensive plan for care.”

March of Dimes has operated in Canada as a non-profit organization for 65 years and depends on raising funds through events like the Spaghetti Dinner to support programs.

With a wait list for all programs in Shelburne, there is a need for more support.

March of Dimes is the lead community-based rehabilitation organization, and a strong advocate and innovative service provider, says Ms. Semple.

“All the funds raised are going to support programs such as Stroke recovery, Post- Polio, Independent Living for People with Disabilities, Assisted Devices, Conductive Education and Assisted Living for Seniors,” she says.

The silent auction and draw for baskets will close on Monday, March 21 at 12 noon.

Everyone is still welcome to participate. Donations can be mailed to 200 Mill Street, Shelburne ON L9V 3R2.

The March of Dimes sends their thanks to the following businesses and institutions that donated this year, so far:
