We will be closed Friday, March 25, Saturday, March 26, Sunday, March 27 and Monday, March 28 of the Easter weekend

March Break was wonderful for us here at the library. Our programs were well attended and I know our children and their families enjoyed Dan the Music Man with 125 in attendance; Zoo to You with 80; and there were 145 of you who enjoyed Peter Pan. Thanks to the Town of Shelburne for once again opening up Grace Tipling Hall for us to enjoy the performances.

We are now back to our regular programming plus a few special events coming up.

Children’s Programs:

Remember Paws to Read is back on Tuesdays from 3.45 to 4.45 p.m. Give us a call if your child would like to come and read to Mac the Therapeutic poodle. He is a terrific listener.

Story time is every Friday at 10.30 a.m. Don’t miss it. We have a fun time with story, songs, crafts, for ages 2 and up. We are still taking names for a baby story and song program, for newborns to 20 months. If you have any questions about the programs or to sign up for any of them, please give us a call at 519-925-2168, or drop in, we would love to see you.

Teen Scene:

Our art submissions have been sent to the Ontario Library Association for judging, so we will let you know if one of our teen submissions wins. Keep your fingers crossed!

This week, we will be flexing our creative muscles through a different method—writing. We are going to compose thoughtful, articulate, and creative letters to the Canadian authors who have been nominated for the White Pine award.

These authors include; Patti Laboucane-Benson, Courtney Summers, Maggie DeVries, and E.K. Johnston to name a few. These authors write excellent Canadian literature, so it’s worth checking out their books! We will then end our month with the teen book club meeting on March 31 to discuss “The Opposite of Geek” by Via Voros.

Oh!  And in other exciting news, one of our young adult patrons will be hosting the first meeting of her book club on March 31, from 4 – 5 p.m. The book club will be hosted monthly on the last Thursday of the month, and she invites members from ages 16 – 30 to join her book club. Members will be able to select a book of their choice from the genre of the month.

If you are interested in joining, please call the library at 519-925-2168 to register.

NEW BOOKS:

We have a Large Print book by Lisa Genova, Inside the O’Briens that I am currently reading. It is a powerful and moving novel of Joe O’Brien, an Irish Catholic cop who finds out that he has Huntington ’s disease. Genova writes with a deep understanding of the emotional toll this takes on Joe’s family- his wife and four children. Does one, or do all of his children carry the gene? The story is heartbreaking but it also demonstrates the strength of the family and how their steadfast love carries them though.

You will remember Genova’s other books, Still Alice, Left Neglected and Love Anthony, all of which deal with difficult topics but demonstrate the skill with which Genova writes about the human tragedies.
