Fans turn out to meet hockey heroes

March 26, 2016   ·   0 Comments

It was a blue and white themed day at the Orangeville Mall during March Break when two of the Toronto Marlies made a special appearance to meet fans and sign autographs on Thursday, March 17.

A line-up started early when word got around that two of the Marlies players would be making a personal appearance.

The Marlies of the American Hockey League are, of course, the farm team for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Early arrivals to the event had the chance to win gift cards from event co-sponsor Sport Chek.

There was also give-aways including a Toronto Maple Leaf jersey, a Marlies jersey, and tickets to upcoming Leafs and Marlies games.

This is not the first time the Mall has brought in outstanding athletes for special events in the Mall,” explained Shauna Duff, Manager, Marketing and Sponsorships for OneReit. “The event is put on by the Mall and the Mall owner (OneReit). OneReit has a partnership with Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment. We have a partnership with the Marlies, the Leafs, the Raptors, Toronto F.C..

“It’s a chance for our customers to meet a well-known player. We have ticket give-aways, jersey give-aways. The first ten people in line all receive a $50 gift certificate to Sport Chek. Today we have T.J. Brennan and Justin Johnson. They’ll be signing autographs, signing jerseys, taking photographs, and just greeting the fans.”

Brennan is a defenceman for the Marlies, Johnson plays right wing for the squad.

Fans turned out from around the region and Brennan and Johnson didn’t disappoint. Both players are terrific ambassadors for both the team and the sport and enthusiastically greeted fans both young and older and took a special interest in many of the younger hockey players who turned out to see some real big league players.

For many of the minor players, some wearing their team jerseys or Toronto gear, getting an autograph added some excitement to their March break activities and gave them a story to tell once they got back to school.
