Junior C Vets post first win

The final minute and a-half of Friday's Junior C game between the Shelburne Vets and the  Fergus Thistles may have been a turning point for the Shelburne squad.

Leading by two, with a man in the box and a sixth Fergus attacker on the floor, the Vets  managed to hold on and work defensively to keep the lead and win their first game of the  2013 season.

“That's probably our first win since five games into last season,” said Vets head  coach Mark Early. “We had around ten or 12 one-goal losses last season.”

The Vets opened the scoring in Friday's game on a powerplay goal by Doug Derbyshire at 4:04  into the first period.

The Thistsle went ahead on three goals but by the time the buzzer sounded to end the period  the Vets had responded scoring two more from Tyler Greer to leave the floor with a 3–3 tie going  into the second period.

Returning for the second period, the Vets turned it up a notch and outscored Fergus 4–1 for the  period to end the frame 7–4.

Vets goals came from Pete Bannon, Brett Snell, Charlie McCannell, and Tyler Shepherd.

While the team has had some difficulty on offence, stopping goals seems to be what they are  good at.

“We are a very strong defensive team,” Early said. “They make a lot of errors but they held on.”

That defensive mode kicked in during the third period when the Fergus squad scored two goals  to make it a 7–6 game at 7:49 into the final twenty minutes.

The Vets notched a single from Ty McCallum at the midway mark then worked to keep the  Thistles stymied in front of the net for the duration.

Shelburne goalie Darryl Ethier made good on several saves when the Fergus squad swarmed  the net late in the game with the extra attacker in a bid to tie it up.

In the penalty box, the teams came out almost even with Shelburne spending 13 minutes in the  box and Fergus getting dinged for 12 minutes in penalties.

After the win, the squad has to focus on their offence, Early said.

“When we are getting five or six goals, we should be winning games like that. They are finally  generated some offence. We are starting to find our way around the net.” He added, “Our powerplay  was very good tonight.”

Several front runners are leading the OJCLL so far this season.

Clarington is a the top going undefeated after six games in the East division with Cornwall right  behind them with a 5–0 record.

In the West division Halton Hills is leading after five games and a single loss, followed by Wilmot  who has a 4–0 record.

The Shelburne Vets will be back in action this Friday, June 7, at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex.

They will host the Caledon Bandits for the second match-up between these two teams this season.

The last time they met, on May 14, the Caledon squad left with a 6–4 win.

Game time is 8 p.m.
