Provincial Junior C in championship series

The Ayr Centennials are leading the Provincial Schmalz Cup Junior C championship final over the Port Hope Panthers after two games.

The best of seven series got underway on Friday, April 22, in Port Hope.

The Alliston Hornets were eliminated by the Panthers in their best-of-seven semi-final series after the Hornets lost 3-0 in Game Six on April 16, on Port Hope home ice.

The Centennials won their semi-final in a four-game sweep over the Essex 73's.

Game One of the championship series saw Ayr take an early lead in the first period to lead 3-1 when the buzzer sounded to end the frame.

Port Hope scored early in the second period to close the gap but the Centennials went ahead with goal number four at the midway mark.

The third period saw the Panthers again score early, but the Centennials wrapped it up with two third period goals to take the 6-3 win.

Going to Ayr home ice on Sunday, April 24, for Game Two of the series, the game was tied at two at the end of the second period after Port Hope scored the only first period goal and Ayr tied it up with the only second period marker.

The Centennials scored at just 1:30 into the third period to again take the lead but the Panthers tied it up at the 13:14 make it a seven minute race to see who could break the tie.

Ayr met the challenge scoring the winning goal with 1:23 left on the clock to win the game 3-2 and lead the series 2-0.

The series was back in Port Hope on Wednesday night, April 27, with results not available at press time.

Game Four will be in Ayr on Friday, April 29.
