Junior C lacrosse season starts this week

By Brian Lockhart

The Ontario Junior C Lacrosse season will get underway this weekend and the Shelburne Junior C Vets will once again be in the battle.

"The Vets will certainly see some changes this year in the roster and behind the bench as well," said Vets GM Barry Trood. "Veteran coach Mark Early did not return this year after four years behind the bench. Don Monahan will step into that position."

Fourth year captain Charlie McCammell is back for his final year of Junior lacrosse and will lead the squad on the floor both offensively and defensively.

Returning players Ty McCallum, Darren Taylor, Zach Laform, Kayden Morely, Grae Fraser, Nick Fines, and Matt Allen all have another year under their belt and will be responsible for filling the gap for the squad on offence.

Veteran Quinn Fraser will return after sitting out last year due to injury and will give the team a much needed face-off man and shooter on the powerplay.

Defensively, Darren Mick, Griffin Moore, Nate Marshall, Liam Greensides, and Kyle Ethier again look to shore up the back end.

The team is looking for over-age Midget, Oriale Manderville, to step in while the team is checking out a number of other players to fill in the roster.

"The team should be stronger in goal this year as both goalies from last season, Rhett Fleming and Wade Sawyers, are returning. Both should play with a lot more confidence this year with that rookie year under their belt," Mr. Trood said.

The 2016 Ontario Junior C season will get underway with a game between Whitby and Huntsville on Saturday, April 30, in Huntsville.

The Shelburne Vets home opener will take place at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex on Friday, May 6.

Game time is 8 p.m.
