Senior Cubs give up loss to Barrie

By Brian Lockhart

It was a well-played game, but the Mansfield Cubs just couldn't get the late runs needed to catch the Barrie Angels during the mid-week game on the diamond at Mansfield on Wednesday, May 18.

The Cubs previous scheduled game against the Allison Athletics on Sunday was washed out when inclement weather forced the League to postpone all but one scheduled game.

Wednesday's game in Mansfield saw the first three innings go scoreless before Barrie brought in a couple of runs in the fourth.

After loading the bases on a walk, the Angels drove a single to centre field that brought in two runs to open the scoring.

The Barrie squad went ahead by three in the fifth when a hit to right field brought in a run.

The Cubs played a solid defensive game ending the sixth inning on a fly to right field.

Mansfield got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning starting with Brad Caldwell with a base hit to third and an overthrow to first base. That was followed up by a nice hit to shallow centre by Brad Pendleton to place Cubs player on first and third.

Bill Hawkins hit to right field to bring in the first Cubs run.

The Angels notched number four when a player stole two bases then was brought in on a hit to centre field.

Caldwell brought in the second Mansfield run on a hit to right field to make it a 4-2 game during the Cubs' last at-bat, but they couldn't make up the difference and had to settle for the loss.

The Cubs had a full roster and then some. Mansfield started a new junior team this season and some of the players are getting some extra experience sitting in with the older guys.

"They put in a junior team this year, so this is the first time we've had a junior team in Mansfield for quite some time," said Cubs coach Jesse Ragazzon. "Four of five other the guys from the junior team came out. A couple of them got into the game.”

Despite the loss, Ragazzon said he thought the squad played a solid game.

"It was a good game,” he said. “We had a ton of base runners. We just couldn't get that clutch hit. I think we had the bases loaded twice and couldn't get that hit. But it was a good game with good pitching."

The Cubs will have three road games before returning to their home diamond on Wednesday, June 8, to host the New Lowell Knights.

The first pitch in that game is scheduled for 6.30 p.m.
