Wednesday’s Senior North Dufferin Baseball League game in Mansfield showed just how resilient the Mansfield Cubs can be.

After going down by four runs to the Alliston Athletics in the early going, the squad bounced back in the mid innings.

The Athletics started off with a home run and were leading 4-0 in the fourth inning.

The Cubs came back with a huge inning that brought in four runs.

Going into the fifth inning, it was a tie starting with a huge hit to right field by Jesse Ragazzon that was good for a double, and put Mansfield men on second and third.

Mansfield’s Adam Coe followed up with a nice hit to the shallow left field that brought in the tying run.

The Cubs took a one run lead in the sixth inning.

Tyler Greer started off with a single that was followed up by another single by Emerson Pendleton, which put two men on base.

The Cubs advanced men when Logan Wallace hit a sacrifice bunt that advanced men to second and third and placed the Mansfield squad in good scoring position.

A run was scored when Bill Hawkins hit to allow enough time for Mansfield to cross the plate.

The game was tied again when the Athletics scored on a fly ball and a tag up that allowed a runner to cross home plate from third base.

That set things up for the final Mansfield at-bat in the bottom of the seventh with once chance to take back the lead.

The game ended with a batter striking out and a 6-6 tie.

“We were down 4-0 after the first inning,” said Mansfield coach Greg Linger. “It was a good game. We kept our bats going and our defence was good. It was a good defensive game. Everything was working well. We just couldn’t get the runs in when we needed them but we got runners on, which is a good thing.

“Each team had opportunities to steal a win tonight. They (Alliston) played really well. They kept us from coming in when we had runners on, and we were able to do the same. It was a good game.”
