Heritage Music Festival delights crowds all weekend

From Thursday evening when the Leahys stepped on stage until the Church Service on Sunday, there was not a dull moment this past weekend at the new Heritage Music Festival.

This year the weather was fantastic, which always helps to bring out the crowds, and there sure were crowds at the Jim Cuddy Band performance on Friday evening.

Jim Cuddy took to the stage at 8 p.m. and played for just over an hour. Then he came back on for several encore songs.

Early in the evening Cuddy’s violinist had the crowd jumping up to cheers after an outstanding solo performance and from that point on there were crowds at the front dancing to Cuddy’s smooth voice, which was fantastically on point for the entire evening.

One of the crowd favorites, which was played during his encore was the ever popular Blue Rodeo song Try to which you could hear then entire crowd singing along with him.

Saturday’s parade saw smaller-than-usual crowds, as well as participants. However, it still had plenty of candy being handed out for the small children that lined the streets to watch. The parade stated with a minute of silence at the park before they precession began, then again a minute of silence was observed when the parade got to Main Street to honour Natasha Paterson who tragically lost her life while getting ready to ride her horse in last year’s parade.

The Open Air Market put on by the Shelburne BIA stretched north along William Street and west along First Street. There were plenty of vendors set up selling their various handmade arts, crafts, jewellery, sunglasses as well as some home-based business such as Thirty One, and Avon.

As usual, there were some really great food vendors serving up their specialties to the crowds.

The Legion was a hub of activity all weekend long with their BBQs, breakfasts and entertainment. Saturday night’s performance by the Campfire Poets was stellar, as usual, and had the crowds on the dance floor until 1.30 a.m.

The actual Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship saw contestants in attendance from all over Ontario, as well as those who travelled from Quebec, Ohio, New Brunswick, Illinois and Alaska with the youngest contestant, Meadhbh Leacy traveling all the way from Naas, Ireland.
