Parents of children attending Glenbrook Elementary School, located at 300 Fiddle Park Lane, will now have the option of using the new Kiss n’ Ride.

As the driveway is shared with the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex (CDRC), there was some deliberation with the Upper Grand District School Board before the two sides came to an agreement on how the Kiss n’ Ride would work.

Councillor Walter Benotto, Chair of the CDRC, told Council an agreement is now in place.

“We have agreed to a one-year trial project that will come back to the table at the end of the school year to determine if it is viable,” he said.

Posted on Glenbrook’s website are instructions for those using the Kiss n’ Ride to follow which reads: The Kiss N’ Ride program is available at the side of the school for student drop-off. To access the drop-off facility, use the turning loop at the head of the driveway to turn around before pulling into the drop off lane along the school-side curb.

Drivers are to remain in their vehicle while using the Kiss n’ Ride and drive directly to the drop off point, at which time students are to exit from the passenger side only of the vehicle. Once all the students have exited the vehicle the driver is then to drive away promptly.

The school does, however, suggest that if you need to accompany your child into the school, or you are picking up by car in the afternoon, to please park in the rear gravel lot, or on a nearby public street wherever parking is permitted. They ask that parents not use the CDRC’s parking lot as it is for CDRC patrons use only.

If students must travel to school by car, they ask that you consider parking or dropping-off/picking-up on a nearby street and walk the remainder of the journey to help reduce traffic and congestion around the school.

As always, drivers should observe traffic rules and only park in designated parking areas. Drive slowly and give pedestrians the right of way at all times and avoid stopping or parking anywhere in the driveways.

“If there is a police presence needed while implementing the Kiss n’ Ride program, I could request it from the Chief, however can’t guarantee it,” stated Councillor Randy Chambers, Chair of the Police Services Board.

Councillor Benotto agreed “it would be a good idea if possible.”

Parents of the school can expect information to be emailed to them if they have provided an email address to the school, and it is also posted on the school’s website: www.ugdsb.ca/glenbrook.
