Students take part in Great Shoreline Cleanup

SHORELINE CLEANUP – On a bright and sunny Saturday, September 24, a group of 15 people from Primrose Elementary School, including parents, teachers and students, participated in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup—a national program that in 2015 cleaned up over 3200 km of shoreline across Canada and collected over 175,000 kg of garbage.
For 2 hours, volunteers cleaned up the shoreline of the Boyne River, located just north of Primrose Elementary School.
They started with the parking lot and worked their way through the trails down to the river. In this short span of time, the group collected 13.5 kg of garbage and 6.2 kg of recycling found along approximately 1 km of shoreline.
The most unusual item found was a traffic sign that somehow made its way to the river’s shore. One of the event organizers, Shelagh McNulty, called the event “a huge success! As an Ontario EcoSchool, trying to achieve platinum status, to see the Primrose community support this initiative is fantastic.”
There are plans to make this an annual event and participate in The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup again next year.
