The best in Country Music took to the stage at Grace Tipling Hall on October 30 when professional musician Bruce Ley, with over 50 years in the business, invited some friends to come together to raise money to develop the meditation garden at Primrose United Church.

Bruce Ley, Nathan Smith and Ryan Hancock, Scott Bruyea and Tom Griffith rocked the hall with “A Sunday Afternoon of Country Classics.”

Bruce Ley is currently the musical director for both Primrose United and Trinity United Churches in Shelburne, working alongside his wife, Rev. Candice Bist, who is the interim minister.

The five musicians were fantastic, singing and playing different instruments to some of the best of old time country music.

Seriously talented, Mr. Ley proved to be just as proficient on guitar as he is on the piano – and amazing to watch close up – switching from guitar to guitar to give just the right sound to every song.

Bruce has played with greats like George Jones and went on to a career in television and live theatre.

Nathan Smith, an easy favourite in Fiddleville as a master fiddle player, also shared sweet vocals to go with his guitar playing, and added a touch of youthful fun to the quintet with his quick and easy sense of humour, bouncing off of the friendly quips coming from both Mr. Ley and Ryan Hancock.

Hancock’s velvety Johnny Cash style vocals were richly appealing and his guitar playing was the perfect match for Ley.

Favourite tunes included Merle Haggard’s “Momma Tried,” Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison,” “I Walk the Line,” “Ring of Fire,” the Stanley Brother’s “Angel Band,” and “She Thinks I Still Care” by George Jones.

Lighting was a bit limited, but the sound equipment was set to perfect levels for the venue making the whole performance thoroughly enjoyable song after song.

Rewind and repeat please fellas – more of Shelburne should hear you!
