Cobwebs and Caviar help keep Canadian Armed Forces Warm

By Michelle Janzen

The quilts that have been assembled at Cobwebs and Caviar for Quilts of Valour is done by a group meeting at the shop calling themselves “the scrapyard junkies.”

“The block for the quilts came for a contest we held at the shop in spring 2015 that was also held across Canada and the United States,” owner AJ Cavey tells the Free Press. “We received the third highest number of blocks across both countries, forty-eight in total. From those blocks we created three quilt tops which Cobwebs and Caviar donated the fabric to sash and assemble and the batting and backing.

“Then, Judy Macleod from the Dufferin Chapter of Quilts of Valour, arranged for the quilting of the quilts and we bind them. In spring 2016, we ran our own contest and received over 100 blocks of two different designs of which we are currently finishing off more quilts for recipients of Quilts of Valour.”

For those of you who don't know what Quilts of Valour are, they are quilts that are handmade with love, respect and gratitude for Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans in recognition of their service and commitment to our country.

The Quilts of Valour Canada Society was founded in 2006 by Lezley Zwaal of Edmonton, Alberta. Since 2014, the Quilts of Valour presentations have touched over 7,000 injured CFA members and veterans. With a goal of touching 10,000 inured CFA members and veterans with Quilts of Valour by 2018, the tag attached to the quilt reads “May the hugs stitched into this quilt give you comfort, strength and love.”

Quilts of Valour is always looking for donations of cash, fabric, completed blocks or tops. As well, sheets, to create backings, are also needed.
