Weekend weather puts a halt on Jr. C semi-final series

Written By Brian Lockhart

The Schmalz Cup semi-final series between the Stayner Siskins and the Lakefield Chiefs should have been decided this past weekend but the ice storm that swept across southern Ontario caused the postponement of both weekend games.

The Siskins are trailing 3-2 in the series.

Game six of the series was scheduled for Saturday, April 14, in Lakefield, but icy roads and nasty conditions caused officials to call the game off.

Game seven was scheduled for Sunday, April 15, but again it was decided to put it off when weather conditions would have made the trek to Stayner dangerous for fans – especially those coming from Lakefield.

Instead, game six was re-scheduled for Tuesday, April 17, in Lakefield. Details were not available at press time.

Lakefield can win the series with a hometown win. If the Siskins are successful and come out with a win the series will return to Stayner for a final showdown on Thursday, April 19.

The semi-final got underway on April 5, with Stayner winning 7-4 in the first game.

The Siskins edged the Chiefs 2-1 in game two.

Lakefield was back in it after turning things around with a 2-1 win in game three on April 8, in Stayner.

Game four saw the series tied when Lakefield delivered a 7-2 blow to the Stayner squad in Lakefield.

The Chiefs took a decisive lead on April 12, when they moved ahead with a 3-1 win in game five and the Siskins were looking at elimination if they took a single loss.

Hockey wasn't the only sport or event affected by the ice storm. Many other local sports announced cancellations of games and practices when it was decided it was just to risky to expect people to drive on ice covered roads.

When the Stayner / Lakefield series is over, the winner will go on to the provincial Schmalz Cup championship and will be up against the Glanbrook Rangers.

Glanbrook won their semi-final against the Lambeth Lancers in a series that went six games and wrapped up on Saturday, April 14, with a 6-3 win for the Rangers.

This will be Glanrook's return to the championship. They had a successful three year run winning the Schmalz cup in 1997, 98, and 99.
