The ice is done but that doesn’t mean hockey isn’t on the minds of a lot of local kids.
Many of us remember setting up hockey nets on the street and diligently moving the nets when a car approached.

The fact that street hockey is so popular spawned a new king of league that started spring up a couple of decades ago.

They moved street hockey indoors to empty areas and started playing it as an organized sport.

From there it has grown rapidly with leagues springing up across the country.

The sports is huge in Europe – especially Eastern Europe – where they get thousands of fans out to championships games.

Many Canadian teams have made the journey overseas to compete in high level tournaments with several returning home with championship cups.

Locally, the Shelburne Shooters take advantage of the arena at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex to host games and the sports is getting more popular every year.

The Shooters host several divisions of players ranging in several age groups.

The league has already started for this season with games on the schedule and teams taking over the floor at the arena.

It’s a great way to bring road hockey into a league set-up that is organized and kids can enjoy a real game without having to worry about approaching traffic. The fact that it is an organized sport also means the teams can enjoy real competition.

The Shooters have regular games at the arena and the players have a real enthusiasm for the sport.
