Schools marking Catholic Education Week

Schools and parishes across the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will host many special events and activities next week, as students, staff, and the community celebrate Catholic Education Week.

“This year’s theme for Catholic Education Week is Renewing the Promise – our promise, as a Catholic community, to keep Catholic faith traditions alive in our Catholic schools,” the school board said in a news release. “Many schools will host events and activities reflective of this theme, including: plays, art displays, celebratory Masses, fundraisers, motivational speakers, and much more.”

“This is a very special week for our students and staff. It is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of faith in our lives, and the role it plays in education,” said Marianne Mazzorato, Director of Education. “We invite all members of our community, especially our parents/guardians and families, to participate in the events and activities planned for their school communities throughout the week.”

To kick-off Catholic Education Week, Dufferin-Peel hosted a Catholic Youth Symposium on Wednesday (May 2). Supported by activities and resources provided by the Archdiocese of Toronto’s Office of Catholic Youth, students will continue the dialogue that began last fall when they met with Bishop John Boissonneau and Bishop Robert Kasun regarding Pope Francis’ Fall 2018 Synod on “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment”. Over 200 secondary students took part in the event at the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Learning Centre.

The Board is running a social media campaign on Twitter called #MyCatholicEducation from April 30 to May 11. Students, staff, parents and alumni are asked to reflect on “What does Catholic education mean to you?” or “How has your Catholic education helped to shape the person you are today?” and share their thoughts through tweets and pictures using the hashtag #MyCatholicEducation.
