Loss leaves Cubs struggling to get back into the standings

The Mansfield Cubs took it on the chin Wednesday night with their eighth consecutive loss after dropping their home game 9–2 to the Aurora Jays.

The top of the third inning had the Jays leading 1–0.

A home run over the left field fence brought in three Aurora runs for a four run lead.

The Cubs had two men on base at their next at-bat but couldn’t finish it off to score.

The Aurora squad did it again in the top of the fifth with another two run homer by Ryan Lewis to give the visitors a six run lead to end the inning.

The Cubs were looking good when they went to bat in the fifth inning with Wade Pirrie placing a well hit ball to the gap in the field, followed by a single from Steve Eggleton.

The bases were loaded for Mansfield when Jarrett Abbott dropped the ball over third base to advance everyone around the diamond.

A fly ball ended the inning and stopped the Cubs from scoring.

There were a few more nice hits in the next inning and an error at first base bought a few seconds that allowed Abbott to cross the plate after holding up on third base.

A second Mansfield run scored when Tyler Linger hit the ball down the third base line.

The Jays kept up their momentum late in the game with yet another two-run homer to end the game.

The final Mansfield shot at-bat saw Brad Pendleton place a hit to centre field to notch a double, but that’s all the Cubs could do for the night and they retired the side and had to settle for the loss.

The loss leaves the Cubs in the number 12 spot in the North Duffering Baseball League.

The squad will play two games on the road before returning to Mansfield to host the Creemore Braves on Wednesday, July 2.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
