Placement: Larry’s Small Engines

This week Coltin Sutton from Centre Dufferin District High School shares a little bit about his Co-op experience and how Larry’s Small Engines is contributing to our community’s future.

Larry’s is a dealership about 14km south of Shelburne just off HWY 10 on County Rd.10. We sell all kinds of new toys ranging from Hustler lawn mowers to brand new snowmobiles, motorcycles and ATV’s. We also fix and service new and older machines that are brought into the shop. Some of the brands are Stihl, Suzuki, Honda, Can AM, Ski Doo and Bombardier Recreational Products(BRP).

As a Mechanic’s Assistant I am doing everything from cleaning the establishment to retrieving, testing, assembling, and even fixing the machines. When they took me on they expected me to know the basic main functions and details on how to fix and run small engine machines. If I have any questions I can ask Larry, Bill, Tom or Harold. They are a very supportive team and have helped me learn a lot. If the team still has questions on how to fix something we can go to the computer to contact the company and receive the information needed to fix that specific machine.

This placement has made me aware of a few of the other jobs that are associated with this line of work. Everything from a parts supplier, small engine mechanic, a sales rep, or this experience  could even lead to jobs such as an automotive mechanic.

Larry’s has been involved in local hospital fundraisers, Shriners, the Rotary Club Ribfest and Kinsman’s Christmas in the Park celebration.
