When Troupe-Adore owner Sohayla Smith and company started Soup Haus one year ago, she said her aim was “to help people by offering the simple things that fill bellies, treat sweet teeth, and make people smile,” And as they celebrated their first anniversary on November 6th, that is just what they had accomplished.

Soup Haus operates as a free restaurant every Tuesday night in coordination with Trinity United Church in Shelburne. “I feel that Soup Haus fills a broad-spectrum need,” Ms. Smith has said.  “Absolutely everyone needs something – sometimes it’s company, sometimes it’s a nice warm meal, sometimes it’s a distraction, respect, kindness, a night off, a good conversation, or something to do.”

Their first dinner in 2017 was served to eight attendees, but last week, along with numerous volunteers, Co-chef Josh Oatman, Gold Sponsor Brenda Haines of the Shelburne Transporter, and Kinettes Club of Shelburne who sponsored the meal, the Troupe served a full house of dinner guests.

The anniversary supper was “a Persian palatial feast served up as a cultural celebratory contribution from the Chef, Sohayla Smith.”

Ms. Smith believes Trinity United Church shares Soup Haus’ vision of giving and bringing people together. Reverend Candice Bist, the Minister at Trinity United Church, calls Soup Haus “a marvellous ministry of love.”

Soup Haus would like to thank Trinity United Church; giving table partner and platinum sponsor The Shepherd’s Cupboard; gold sponsors: The Shelburne Transporter, and an anonymous gold sponsor; Silver Sponsors: Primrose Park, and the Museum of Dufferin; Bronze sponsors: The Kinette Club of Shelburne, Oatman’s, Cassie Eichhorn, Spaw-fect Grooming; and Produce Sponsor ta’Pisani Farms.

Anyone wanting to make a financial donation towards food costs can do so on the website: souphaus.ca. Soup Haus also accepts non-perishable donations like flour, sugar, chocolate chips, sunflower oil, fresh produce, and contributions of mason jars and smaller jam jars for pickling and preserves.

Sohayla Smith says, “Soup Haus looks forward to continuing to serve wholesome and delicious food made with love every Tuesday evening.” Guests can reserve their seats on the Soup Hause website: souphaus.ca, or by phone at 519-217-2151, or Facebook w.facebook.com/souphaus.  Walk-ins are always welcome.
