Not so scary Scare Crows

DSC05474 DSC05472 DSC05468 DSC05466 Like most 70 year olds who retire to the quiet country life of Melancthon, Lynn Partridge took up a new hobby. Unlike most 70 years old who retire to the quiet country life of Melancthon, this 70 year old decided it was time to make Scare Crows, and not just any Scare Crows, these works of art are themed!

For years, Partridge, owned and ran, Lynn's Stained Glass, a small business in Aurora.  Achieving a life goal in retiring to the country, Lynn, without skipping a beat took up gardening with her husband and together spent years living their dream.

As most artists know, life can suddenly point many artists in different directions following a lifestyle change such as retiring, or a change in living environment.

Partridge is an excellent example of creativity colliding with country and soon an idea to keep crows and wildlife out of her garden became an artistic expression the like few have ever seen.

“I guess I began making Scare Crows as sort of a hobby and then I got carried away,” Partridge laughs at herself. “I would make them for people if they asked. Maybe this will be a new business venture!”

But on lookers beware! At first glance, from a distance, these more than life- like Scare Crows can appear like people and that can make for a bewildering, slightly un-nerving, even creepy experience even in daylight, followed by hysterical laughter upon realizing what is actually being seen when up close.

A lover of the Doberman breed of dogs, and owner of two herself, Partridge enjoys a laugh at anyone's expense including her beloved pets. “When I first placed the Scare Crows in the field, my dogs were barking and barking! They thought people were in the field! It was really funny!”

When Partridge is not busy tending her garden, which she hopes will produce winning prizes at the Agricultural Fair this upcoming September , she is busy making her next creation.

This energetic, enthusiastic, 70 year old believes she knows the secret to staying young and offers this advice, “You have to be happy, and you have to be feisty!”

If ever on a Sunday drive in the country and it appears that off in the distance, a man stands, bow ready, pointed at a woman's head, rest assured, it's probably just William Tell Scare Crow aiming at the apple wearing Miss Piggy Scare Crow, and if you take time to notice, coincidentally, there is not a crow in sight!
