CDDHS Royals Junior Boys going to District 4 rugby championships

Written By BRIAN LOCKHART

After a good regular season that landed them in second place in the District 4 / 10 standings, the Centre Dufferin District High School Royals junior rugby team have earned the right to go to the championship after a 33-22 win over Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute in their semi-final playoff game on Thursday, May 16.

The Royals had a 4-2 record in the regular season.

It's a good achievement for the junior team considering they only had two players on the team this year who have played rugby before.

The squad played a solid semi-final game after getting off to a rough start then picking up the pace for the win.

“I think we played really well,” said Royals player Abel Sales after the game. “We dug deep, we all came up and we hit them. Defensively we all stayed together and worked as a team. We were suffering a little bit at the start and they scored a couple of trys but we fought through it.”

The team will have one more practice to get ready for the championship game.

“It was a pretty good game – we won and we're going through to the final,” summed up Royal's player, Aidan MacKenzie. “We worked really good as team. I think we did pretty good for the season especially since we have only two guys on the team that have played before. We all worked as a team. We all helped each other out when we needed it. We made our tackles when it was needed. On defence we did good pushing up to stop them when coming at us. We supported each other.”

The Royals will have a tough challenge ahead of them in the final. They will be up against the first place John F. Ross Vocational Institute team who are undefeated for the season, however the Royals have the ability to come out on top in the final game.

The District championship was played in Guelph on Wednesday, May 22, in Guelph, with results not available at press time.
