This year, Family Day 2020 is no exception, with lots to keep the whole family busy.  Entrance to the main building and participation in an outdoor hockey game, with local hockey legend Aaron Downey, is by donation only on Monday, Feb. 17. Events start at noon and run until 4 p.m., making for a fun and affordable Family Day - done the Canadian Way, with old time activities, a scenic winter setting, hot chocolate, and, of course, hockey. Everyone is invited to join the museum for their first event of 2020. NHL Stanley Cup winner, Aaron Downey will organize visitors into teams in the MoD parking lot for the big “road hockey” game. Visitors wishing to participate should bring their stick, helmet, and comfortable boots. Dufferin County First Responders will be on site with their trucks and equipment, while inside the museum, there will be lots of crafts and games to enjoy. There will be popcorn available, as well as coffee for the parents and hot chocolate for the kids.  ‘Spenser's Kids' will be joining the event with shoot out hockey. The organization, established in memory of Spenser McFayden, a six-year-old hockey player who suffered fatal injuries en route to a game in 2014, promotes and supplies used gear for kid's hockey in the area. Chuck McFayden, Spenser's brother, will be bringing their hockey van, so that anyone with extra gear to share can drop it off at the event. ‘Spenser's Kids' will see that it gets to an eager child whose family does not have the funds for hockey equipment. “Family Day is one of our fundraising initiatives,” says Museum of Dufferin Promotions Co-ordinator, Nanci Malek. The event has run for the past six years, with Aaron Downey volunteering his time for the community as the highlight for the event for the fourth year. “We get an amazing crowd for the game,” she says, “primarily kids, but some parents help out too.” “The MoD is always excited about our Family Day event,” says Nanci Malek. “Aaron Downey is such a community supporter and we are thrilled that he is joining us again this year - and having the Dufferin County First Responders always makes the event special.” Family Day will be one of the last chances to see the ‘True. Grit' display, as the museum will be opening a brand new exhibit in May of 2020. ‘True. Grit' is a display of artifacts, archival materials, and modern photography that compares and contrasts local pioneers and present-day residents, all of whom have made important contributions to Dufferin County. “New this year,” Nanci Malek says, “We have 15 hands-on/minds-on activities throughout the ‘True. Grit' Exhibit.”   Additionally, Ms. Malek says that guests will be able to explore the work of local artists, try their hand at weaving, learn to draw a Pegasus, or sit in a 100 year old school desk to test their spelling on a slate.    Doors open at noon of Feb. 17 with the parking lot road hockey game running for an hour and a half -”or until people need warming up,” says Nanci Malek. Entrance is by donation. The event closes at 4 p.m. --------------------------------------------------- Images: --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Post date: 2020-01-09 11:48:43 Post date GMT: 2020-01-09 16:48:43 Post modified date: 2020-01-16 13:43:56 Post modified date GMT: 2020-01-16 18:43:56 ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Export of Post and Page as text file has been powered by [ Universal Post Manager ] plugin from www.gconverters.com
