Carriage House Antiques celebrates 34th Anniversary in business

Carriage House Antiques is located at 119 and 121 Adeline St and September 4th, 2013, marks 34 years in business!

Business owner, Bryan M. Harris has been involved in the antique business all of his life, following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps.  While in England at the age of four, Harris can recall polishing silverware for his grandparents. “It was their way to keep me busy and is probably the reason I still use a tooth brush to polish silver to this very day,” Harris recalls with a fond chuckle.

Harris remembers the population of Shelburne being only 1,750 when he arrived and sites over the years there were many antique shops then and notes the decline in antiques stores in the surrounding area is likely due to lifestyle changes that coincide with subdivision living, sparking different preferences in furniture choices. According to Harris, furniture is only worth one eighth what it was ten years ago.

Harris shared a bit of history surrounding the building his store is located in, “When I bought this building I was told it was built by a one-legged man and his young son who later grew up to be a surgeon! It's built with re-claimed material,” said Harris.

Antiques helped Harris put himself through university. Having been a teacher, a farmer as well as an antique dealer has provided Harris with countless experiences, including having travelled back to England a staggering 81 times over the years to visit with family and friends and also to scout out the next find.

“This is a hobby that pays. A person can always find time to do what they want to do,” said Harris, “Every year, I try to do two new things. This year I might focus on porcelain and glass wear.”

Married fifty-one years and a father of two, this once native of Leicester, England, can add to his own uniqueness when admitting, “I'm not a collector of anything. I am a dealer. The main thing is to enjoy it!”

Carriage House Antiques is open on Saturdays and by appointment only. Contact Harris to peruse through an eclectic collection of unique antiques by calling 519-942-8862.
