Wolves Novice Rep team done for the season

March 26, 2014   ·   0 Comments

They may have lost the final game, but the Shelburne Wolves Novice Rep team still ended up as the number two team in the Georgian Bay Minor Hockey League ‘C’ pool division.

This was after a season that saw the Novice squad improve every time they went out onto the ice.

In the final series, the Wolves were up against the Coldwater Wildcats in a best of five match-up.

The Wolves were down 2–0 going into the final after being squeezed out by a single goal in the first two games.

In the early going of game three, the Shelburne squad pulled ahead with a 4–2 lead going into the third period, but a strong Wildcats offence managed to break through and score two quick goals to make it a tie game.

A final Coldwater goal late in the period ended the game and the series and the Wildcats left with the championship.

“Every game was a one goal game,” Said Wolves head coach Dean Baird. “Honestly, we should have won all three games. In game one we didn’t play the first period and a-half. We were down 5–0 halfway through the second and we lost 6–5. We came all the way back. Today, we had just that one period – our goalie played unbelievable. He made great strides this year.”

Liam Matthews was in goal and made several spectacular saves during game three.

On the offence, Tyler Higginson was the big goal scorer notching a hattrick in the final game.

Josh Rideout was the other goal scorer for Shelburne with a single.

“I’d rather lose a hundred games like that, than win one game in a blow-out,” Baird said of the close competitive results of the tight games. “I like the close games and the competitiveness.”

Baird said he was impressed by the way the Novice squad got better and better as the season progressed.

“As a coach, I’ve seen them progress a lot all year. Just to see them develop and progress as a team is very satisfying.”
