Development and doctors highlight EDC Annual Breakfast

Construction, development, growth and new doctors – all words the Economic Development Committee (EDC) members were happy to hear on April 24th.

Held at the Shelburne Legion, Committee members networked and shared the news, good or bad, as they have done for over 18 years at the annual EDC Breakfast meeting.

More than 120 from Shelburne and area businesses attended the annual event, with representatives from Orangeville and area as well. The EDC works to support growth in Shelburne with workshops and activities geared to assisting existing businesses while encouraging new development to create a strong economic base.

Shelburne's Chief Administrative Officer, John Telfer announced there had been an investment of 249 homes in town with an additional 277 homes moving forward later in 2014 -2015 as forecast; a total investment in housing of $43 million in 2014.

Construction zones in 2014 will include the neighbourhoods of Summerhill, Greenbrook Village, Assisted Living Units on First Ave., Wrigglesworth Plaza, the Giant Tiger expansion, First Avenue Properties, Main Street, 2nd Line, and the 54,000 sq ft expansion at KTH which is expected to generate 30 new jobs.

Mr. Telfer further announced several proposals still in the planning stages, including Vandyk Group's four storey condo complex with 80 units, and the Blackwood Development proposal for a commercial big box store.

Also in the “planning hopper” is a secondary plan for lands west of Shelburne's built boundary, a sewer treatment plant, and the completion of Well #7 with distribution lines along Highway 89.

Ron Munroe, project lead for Dufferin.Biz spoke of working closely with Dufferin EDC's to support work and offer resources. Dufferin.Biz connects businesses in the County by working in alliance with the Greater Dufferin Area Chamber of Commerce and the Hills of Headwaters Tourism Association. “We didn't have the resources individually,” said Munroe, “but together we can get things done.”

The guest speaker for the morning gave a preview of the “Bridges Out of Poverty” workshop to be held at Grace Tipling hall on May 13th. Elaine Weir is a certified “Bridges” trainer and a registered nurse with Dufferin-Wellington-Guelph Public Health working on the front lines.

Weir stressed that in a country where one of every 10 Canadians lives in poverty, these workshops strive to help businesses develop strategies for successful work experiences with employees coming from a life of poverty.

Mayor Ed Crewson, who has worked hard along with committee members to attract medical professionals to the area, expressed his relief and gratitude for the addition of six doctors at the Shelburne Centre for Health, two of whom arrived near the end of 2013.

The young couple, Dr. Aila Dela Cruz and Dr. Tristan Sumabat, charmed the audience at breakfast and received news of a community that is more than happy to welcome them. The two doctors said the Centre for Health is accepting new patients; clients can call for an appointment at 925-0017.

Mayor Crewson held, “The Centre for Health taking on new patients, the KTH announcement, the new homes, commercial plazas and industrial developments, show great confidence that this community is a place that is prospering.”
