Royal senior girls end season in semi–finals

It was a tightly played game between two evenly matched squads, but when the final buzzer sounded, the Centre Dufferin District High School Royals senior girls basketball team had to settle for a loss to Norwell District Secondary School in the Division 4 semi-final playoff round.
The Royals ended the regular season with a 5–3 record and a second place in the standings – one ahead of the third place Norwell team who claimed a 4-4 record for the year.
The game got underway on Wednesday, October 29, at CDDHS's home court. At the half the Royals were trailing by a single point when Norwell took a 16–15 lead.
The Royals battled hard in the second half but lagged in the third quarter after missing some hoops and Norwell started pulling ahead.
Late in the fourth quarter, the CDDHS squad called a time-out to re-group and put together a strategy to get back into the game, but time ran out before they could even it up.
“We were kind of on the low at the first part of the season, but we really came together as a team,” said Royals captain Micaela Pflance. “We started working together and I think that really improved our game.”
The Royals were clearly disappointed at the loss but ended the season on a high note by playing full-out up until the end.
“We were talking, trying to keep a positive mind,” Micaela said of the final game. “We definitely thought we were going to move on but things happen, shots don't go in.”
Despite the loss, coach Brad McGitchie, praised the team's skill and tenacity through the season.
“We had a good team this year and did well in the regular season,” He said. “We beat them (Nowell) all year – twice in the regular season. We had good leadership on the team and a good group of girls who have been playing together – now, for their fourth year. We would normally dominate a team like that. We normally would score 25 points down low on them, but we just couldn't get the ball in there today.”
The pressure of being behind in the second half changed the game plan for the Royals.
“We got away from our game,” McGitchie said. “Our game is in tight underneath the basket - we were trying to shoot from father out then we're used to.”
The Norwell team will now go on to meet Westside Secondary School in Orangeville for the district final.
