4H annual awards banquet 100 years in the making

The year 2014 marks a milestone for the 4-H Clubs of Canada as they celebrate their 100th Anniversary. Approximately 115 people attended the Annual Dufferin 4-H Club's Award Ceremony where pride, love for agriculture and life was the prevalent and a noble sentiment permeated throughout the Hall at the Legion 220 Branch on December 5th.
Completely run by volunteers, the 4-H Club means so much to so many and this fact is evident when acknowledging the volunteers who unselfishly gave their time during 2014 consisted of Melody Darling, Bill McCutcheon, Mary Lynn Smith, Alan Whyte, Cathy Lasby, Justin Lasby, Anne Paquettte, Sandy Wallace, David Lasby, Allan Mournahan, George Van Kampen, Adam Whyte, Maise Lasby, Aaron Whyte, Brenda Lothman, Annalynn Murray, Shirley Lasby, Earl Smith, Dawn Van Kampen, Kathy Rooyakker, Diane Orr, Alice Jones, and Alicia Snooks. In point of fact, Earl Smith sits on the 4-HClub's Board of directors and this year took home an Award for 15 years of Volunteering
With a philosophy like the 4-H Club's, that being, “I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, my health to better living for my club, my community, and my country,” a greater understanding with regards to the nature of the quality of people who graduate from the 4-H Club is easy to see.
Even 4-H Club's ‘Grace' which is sung to the tune of Auld Lang Syne, “We thank thee Lord for Blessings great, On this our own fair land, Teach us to serve thee joyfully, with head, heart, health and hand,” indicates a goodness and power in strength and understanding, a commitment to community and agriculture and even clearer understanding of the importance of Farming.
For those new to Shelburne, the 4-H Club offers many different programs to kids in the community allowing them to learn about farming, photography, cattle, showing at Fairs, public speaking, knitting, sewing, farm equipment, vegetables, healthy meals, and so much more. Capping the program at 21years of age means that graduates can then volunteer, pass the torch so to speak and help with the younger generations on outings, teaching and field trips.
