Council and community to congratulate Ed CrewsonFormer Shelburne Mayor Ed Crewson and his family will be formally congratulated on over 25 years of political service to the Town on January 22nd. The Council, staff and community are working together to prepare a gala evening of food and entertainment in the Crewsons' honour. Shelburne's Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) John Telfer says: “Shortly after his announcement that he was not seeking re-election, the thought process switched to how the community could acknowledge 25 years of devoted community service as a political figure that put community first. Several Council members and staff got the process started immediately. This family needed to be thanked by the community and this was our opportunity.” A lot of thought has gone into “how we could best pay tribute to a man that had made sacrifices for community over his personal time,” says the CAO. A gala dinner seemed to be the answer and “with class.” A local Dufferin catering company will be serving a three course meal, including prime roast beef. There may be a little extra “roasting” on the menu as well; it was decided this would be best served by comedians, so Humber College was contacted to see “who was the best of the best,” says Telfer. Several co-hosts will be featured throughout the evening as well. Centre Dufferin District High School (CDDHS) has volunteered audio/media services both for pre-taping and footage at the gala, facilitating interviews and stories. The CAO is very happy “the community has pulled together to make it a truly community minded event to remember.” John Telfer noted that, “The funniest part of the organization of the event was to leave Ed in the dark as to what we were doing and only giving him the date to save in his calendar. That worked for a while but he was curious as to what we were up to. Well, once the mass emails went out to different organizations, that he was a part of over the last 25 years, his email address slipped into one of the bulk group mailings and there I was asking Ed to delete the email before I could recall the email listing.” “Well…he knows where and what, but not who and how the event will be conducted,” says CAO Telfer, “I told Ed to smile at the gala as it is all in good taste and he can hate me the next day after the roasting!” The Premier was invited to attend, but unfortunately had to decline due to time conflicts. John Telfer and the staff send “many thanks to those that have offered their time and effort to make this a real special event.” Anyone wishing to donate a special or unique item for the silent auction may contact the Town Hall; proceeds will go to Transition House and Safe Communities, two of Ed Crewson's favourite charities. So far, the silent auction has several items ranging from Leaf tickets to a Tall Ship dinner and cruise, and a Via Rail return trip - Toronto to Ottawa, as well as gift baskets. “An evening with the Crewsons” gala will take place January 22nd, at 6 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, 203 William Street, in Shelburne – business attire and bowties preferred. Tickets are $50 each or a table of 8 for $400. For those still needing tickets for this one time event, contact the Town Hall at 519 925-2600 for information or RSVP to John Telfer at jtelfer@shelburne.ca by January 14th. By Marni Walsh |
