Tyke 1 at Alan Nixon Memorial TournamentGame 1, Shelburne Tyke 1 vs Honeywood: Blazing Blades It was the night before the tournament, and in the dressing room, coach Chris Pomeroy handed out bright laces, that the tykes would use soon. The next day Coach Chris set up lines, that only a mastermind can, in hopes that they would be champions, of the tournament again. Well the laces seemed to be an ignition source. The entire team seemed to fly over the ice with their skates on fire! In the opening minutes, Shelburne struck first, then Honeywood answered back just as quickly. A din fell over the Shelburne crowd. This was going to be interesting. Then Tyke 1 lit their after burners and dominated the game offensively and defensively. Whether it was teamwork (nice passes Aiden, Ayrton, Bode), fore checking (way to get the puck in Honeywood's end Brooke and Nathan), defensive play (nice hustle Ben), blocked shots (Logan you're very brave), playing on side (way to go Wyatt), scoring (Erik gets 2 goals in 1 shift) or saves (Maaaaason), the team's determination was very obvious. Tyke 1 wins 7 to 1. Game 2, Shelburne Tyke 1 vs Essa 1: Things Get Tougher Pumped from their first game, Tyke 1 hit the ice surface with the same grave determination, but so did Essa 1. These two teams were evenly skilled. At any point in the game, either team could have run away with it. Had it not been for some heads up plays by Marshall, Ben and Evan, Essa would have done just that. Jackson got a huge go ahead goal in the third. But Essa was able to tie it up. That's how it ended: Shelburne 5, Essa 5. Based on the overall point spread, Tyke 1 advanced to the final. Game 3, Shelburne Tyke 1 vs Essa 2: The Final Tyke 1 was up against Essa 2 in the final, a team with depth and three full lines whereas Shelburne Tyke 1 had just over 2.2 lines. Added to that, one Shelburne tyke had a nose bleed minutes before the game that reminded me of Niagra Falls. Thanks to trainer Rachel Fazackerley, he made it on the ice with no further incident. Does the 2 in Essa 2 mean it's their second best team? The answer to that question is no. Shelburne fought a hard battle; they gave it all that they had left in them. Despite their best efforts, this year the tournament winner was Essa 2. Bernadette summed up the tournament perfectly: “I hope all the kids are proud of how they played today in all three of the games. The scoreboard doesn't always reflect all the effort the team put into the game and the third game is proof of that. They all played great!” Which brings me to another quote. “2 out of 3 ain't bad” meatloaf. If you look at what these tykes have accomplished, this was only their first loss in 7 games. That's impressive. |
