Mighty Tykes invade ShelburneWhat they lack in size, they make up with enthusiasm and a lot of energy. Hockey players from around the region turned out for the annual Allan Nixon Tyke Tournament held at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex in Shelburne on Saturday, January 17. The Tykes got an early start in the tournament with the teams playing against each other to determine their final berth in a round robin style to determine a winner. Over all there was around 80 players that signed up with their teams, coaches and managers to compete on the ice. All of the teams represented house league players from around the region. A total of six teams entered this year including two representing Shelburne Wolves Minor Hockey. Other teams arrived from Grand Valley, Honeywood, and two teams from Essa. The Tournament got an early start with the first game getting underway at 8:00 a.m. and action was non stop for the entire day. Moving into the afternoon, the teams found themselves placed in a berth for the final based on their performance through the day. The Tykes proved to have non stop energy for the duration as they provided fans in the stands with non stop action for the length of the tournament. The tournament wrapped up in the early evening with the final game being played. It was good experience for the young players to learn some discipline on the ice through tournament play.
