A good time had by all at ‘Newfie Night’

Once again a boatload of people attended the 5th Annual Newfie Night and Babs Defoe, in charge of entertainment at the legion estimated that 300 people would attend the by the time the night was over. The night started off with a great Newfoundlander dinner including fried bologna, ham, boiled potatoes, carrots and cabbage as well as turnip and beans. Yummy!
Next up was the live entertainment of “Off the Rockers”, who kept the floor hopping with lots of Newfie jigs as well as crowd favourites such as the Proclaimers King of the Road, Kenny Rogers Coward of the County and even slowed it down with a great cover of the Beatles Imagine.
Next was what every Newfoundlander knows as the ‘Screech In' Ceremony. It is the only way for those not lucky enough to be born a true Newfoundlander to become as close to being one as possible, without having to die and be reincarnated as one. Those mainlanders who survive the ceremony will be forever know as Honorary Newfoundlanders.
The ‘Screech In' Ceremony can only be performed by a natural born Newfoundlander. The Ceremony host will hold up a fish, preferably a cod so that the victim can kiss the fish on the lips. The host and witnesses have final say on whether the kiss is sufficient to continue. In rare cases, two or more kisses have to be administered before you are able to move onto the last step in the process.
Next the host will gingerly hand the victim a shot of Screech. Upon downing this drink you are presented with a ‘Screech In' Certificate as proof of your adventure. Welcome to the Royal Order of Screechers!
