Junior C battle through semi–finals




With golf season almost here, the provincial Junior C Playoffs are down to four teams battling it out to earn the right to got to the provincial Schmalz Cup final.
The Alliston Hornets of the Georgian Mid Ontario Hockey League are trailing 3–0 in their series with the Port Hope Panthers of the Empire B Junior C Hockey League.
The Hornets lost game three on home ice on Easter Sunday to find themselves in a precarious position.
Although in their quarter-final round, the Hornets were down three games to the Walkerton Hawks then fought back to win four straight to take the series and advance.
Port Hope came to the final after winning their quarterfinal against the Clarington Eagles in a series that went six games.
That series was scheduled to go back to Port Hope for game four on Tuesday (Apr. 7) night.
If the Hornets can win, the series will return to Alliston for game five on Thursday, April 9.
In the other semi-final series, the Essex 73's of the Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League are leading the Ayr Centennials of the Mid West Junior C Hockey League, 2–1 after three games.
The 73's are former Schmalz Cup champions having won the provincial title in 2002, 2005 and 2009.
They have been finalists five times over the past five years.
The Ayr Centennials are first time champions in their league, but went to the League finals in 2014 – losing to the Paris Mounties.
The series is guaranteed to go five games with game four in Ayr, and game five of the series scheduled for April 7, in Essex.
