‘The Hobbit’ roars through Shelburne

Dragon in Shelburne! LP Stage Productions' The Hobbit roared through Shelburne last weekend at Grace Tipling Hall with a climatic finish that included this 9 foot tall version of J.R.R. Tolkien's dragon “Smaug.” The cast included 25 local children from the ages of 5 to 17 taking on the famous tale which is intricately woven with mystical history and adventure. The complex narrative called for a lot of work from the young actors who portrayed the Canadian written script without missing a line, performed dances, acrobatics, controlled the dragon, and sang the songs of Dwarfs, Elves and of course Hobbits. Moveable, multi-purpose set pieces made for a smooth transition from scene to scene and the awesome appearance of Smaug, complete with glowing eyes and smoking nostrils, surpassed audience expectations. Audience attendance was strong throughout the weekend as the production company gains a reputation for solid performances that provide an intense theatrical learning experience for young people in Shelburne and surrounding area. The Hobbit was directed by Dale Lundy, who also designed and created the dragon and set along with several of the young performers and choreography was by Kristen Gamache. Although The Hobbit is finished, LP Productions is in full swing with their next production Into the Woods Jr., directed by Alison Port, and set to open at Grace Tipling Hall on May 21st running to May 31st. Into the Woods Jr. is a youth production of the famous Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim based around fairy tales, but wonderful for all ages, and features exceptional singing and dancing by the teen cast. Tickets range from $12–$15 and are available at the door, or online at lpstageproductionsinc.com, or by calling the Town Hall at 519 923-2600 ext. 0.
