New initiative teaches kids: “Be the Best You Can Be”

“Be the Best You Can Be” day is a new Shelburne and area elementary school initiative inspired by the “Me to We” concept that originated with Canadian activist Craig Kielburger of Free the Children. After participating in “We Day” in Waterloo for three years with local students, and witnessing the inspiring benefits, Child and Youth Counsellor at Hyland Heights and Glenbrook Elementary schools, Tara Bernard-McCabe, and fellow educators, came up with the idea to bring the inspiring experience to home to Shelburne.
Tara told the Free Press, “With the support of the Shelburne Arena Board, some amazing volunteers and a “Speak Up” grant, we are ready to provide an amazing experience for students in grades 6, 7, and 8 from Centennial Hylands, Hyland Heights, Glenbrook, and Primrose” on May 14th. Approximately 475 students from the four North Dufferin elementary schools will attend the inaugural event from 9:45 am to 2:45 pm at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Centre.
“The goal of the day is give local students inspiration from far and near so everyone understands that there is always support to “Be the Best You can Be,” says Tara. “They will be entertained, informed and enlightened, thanks to numerous volunteers who have supported the event. Music, service club opportunities, dancers, and Youtube sensations are among the day's events. This is a chance for students to understand how our community and beyond can encourage individuals to Be the Best You Can Be.”
Volunteers for the event are coming from as far away as Port Perry and London to inspire and lead the students. The organizers are excited about their “amazing line up.” Presenters will include Corey Bricknell from “Fighting the Truth; The Doorman Josh Yandt from Youtube; a graffiti artist; NHL's Aaron Downey; Olympian Brian Price; and Shed the Light, a student based group speaking about mental health. Local presenters include Mayor Ken Bennington, Councillor and Lawyer Wade Mills, Laura Ryan, local service clubs, and Turn It Out dancers, who will lead students in a dance. Also in the line-up will be local students singers, musicians, fundraisers, Jenn Kelk from the Bahati Project, Wayne White from Friends of Island Lake, Deb Wagstaff for the food bank, and Jennifer Payne of the Headwaters Food Project. Tara hopes that students will get the message that their support begins “right here at home.”
Following through on the concept of community, students will be asked to donate a non-perishable food item to the Shepherd's Cupboard food bank as their cost for the event. A local business has promised increase their community support by donating one dollar per item up to $500.
