Local schools go to basketball championship![]() The Dufferin Elementary School Basketball final tournament got underway at Westside Secondary School in Orangeville, on Tuesday, May 5, with two Shelburne area schools playing in the final games. A total of eight teams made it to the finals with boys and girls teams playing in both the ‘A' and ‘B' pools. Action got underway with a 6 p.m. start in the Westside gym. Girl's ‘B' pool The Laurelwoods Elementary School Lady Lightning girl's team were up against the Island Lake Public School Lakers in the second game of the night for the ‘B' pool championship with the tip-off starting the game at 7:40 p.m. in the Westside gym. A good side crowd of enthusiastic supporters were there to cheer on their teams. The Lakers got a good start in early in the game and pulled ahead with a 13–4 lead by half time. The Lady Lighting came alive in the second half getting some good baskets and a point on a foul shot, but they couldn't close the gap by the time the clock ran out. They had to settle for a 20–10 loss to Island Lake, but the Lady Lightning played a good season the got them to the finals. Boy's ‘A' pool The Glenbrook Elementary School Grizzlies boy's team and the Montgomery Village Public Shool Vipers met up for the Dufferin Elementary School ‘A' pool final. They played the final game of the tournament with the opening tip-off starting the game at 8:30 p.m. in the Westside gym. The Vipers had a big first half that saw them hitting the mark to notch 15 points by the time the buzzer sounded for the break. The Grizzlies stayed close on successful baskets scoring ten points in the first half. Starting the second half, the Vipers started to pull away on some early success and turned up the heat on the defence hounding the Grizzlies around the net. The gamed ended with a 34–16 win for the Montgomery Village team. The Grizzlies boy's team had a successful season that got them to the final showing a lot of skill on the court for all of their games.
